Visual Reference
What inspectors look for during a walkthrough.
Beyond signs, inspectors physically check your equipment for compliance markings and safety features. Here's what each one looks like and where to find it.
VGBA-Compliant Drain Cover
Federal law since 2008. Required on every commercial pool/spa drain.
What to look for
"ASME/ANSI A112.19.8" stamped or molded into the cover
Manufacturer name + model number visible
Cover sits flush, no cracks or warping
Manufacturer date — replace per their schedule (typically 5-7 yrs)
GFCI Outlet
Required on every circuit serving the plunge. Tests itself on press.
What to look for
Visible TEST and RESET buttons in the center of the outlet
Yellow or green status light (varies by manufacturer)
Pressing TEST should immediately cut power
Pressing RESET should restore power with a click
Electrical Bonding (NEC 680)
All metal equipment within 5 ft of water must be electrically bonded together — prevents shock from stray voltage.
What to look for
Solid #8 AWG copper wire connecting metal components
Connected to: pump, motor, ladder, deck rebar (if applicable)
Lugs or split-bolts at each connection point
No visible breaks, corrosion, or loose connections
County Health Permit
Annual permit from San Diego County Environmental Health. Must be visibly posted.
What to look for
Permit number and current year visible
Facility name matches the operating business
Expiration date in the future
Posted at front desk or near the plunge
Lifesaving Equipment
Required by Title 22 for any pool/spa over 24" deep. Cold plunges qualify.
What to look for
Ring buoy with 30+ ft of attached rope, OR
Shepherd's crook (long pole with curved end), OR both
Mounted within 6 ft of the plunge, easily reachable
Not blocked by furniture or storage
Test Kit / Strips
Inspectors expect to see actual testing equipment on-site, with current calibration.
What to look for
Liquid test kit (Taylor K-2005 or equivalent) preferred
Test strips OK as backup but not primary
Reagents not expired (check the date on the bottles)
Stored in cool, dry, locked location away from public
