View a sample →The Cold Standard is a nationwide cold plunge and sauna service company, headquartered in San Diego — and now on the route in the Pacific Northwest. Our Portland technician covers the metro from Hillsboro and Beaverton on the west side, through Lake Oswego, Tigard, Tualatin, and West Linn, out east to Gresham and Happy Valley, down to Oregon City, and across the Columbia to Vancouver, WA: routine maintenance, repairs, chiller diagnostics, deep cleans, and manufacturer warranty service for brands like Plunge. Sauna service too, for the rest of your recovery room.
Portland's long wet season is its own kind of hard on an outdoor plunge. Months of rain find their way past loose covers and overflow the tub, diluting the chemistry between visits. Fir needles, maple leaves, and moss collect on lids and clog the chiller's air intake and filters, and a choked condenser coil is the fastest route to a warm plunge and a worn compressor. Winters are mostly mild, but cold snaps and ice storms do come through and tend to bring power outages — and a plunge that stops circulating on a sub-freezing night can freeze its lines, pump, and chiller heat exchanger. Then summer heat waves push chillers hard for weeks. Portland plunges need a service partner who plans for all of it.
Most of the metro drinks Portland Water Bureau water from the Bull Run watershed, and it is famously soft: the bureau puts Bull Run at 7 to 11 ppm total hardness — about half a grain per gallon — and its July 2026 test results list 100% Bull Run water at 7 mg/L hardness, 29 mg/L total alkalinity, and pH 8.8. The bureau adds sodium carbonate and carbon dioxide to raise pH and alkalinity for corrosion control, and its Columbia South Shore groundwater, blended in at times, is harder at roughly 68–80 ppm. Across the river, Vancouver, WA is 100% groundwater from the Orchards, Troutdale, and Sand-and-Gravel aquifers, with 79–140 ppm hardness and 75–110 ppm alkalinity in the city's 2024 report.
For a plunge, soft is not automatically good. Water with almost no calcium and little alkalinity is aggressive: it pulls metal from chiller heat exchangers, pump hardware, heater elements, and fittings. With only ~29 ppm of alkalinity to buffer it, pH bounces every time sanitizer or shock goes in or rain gets under the cover. So in Portland we do the opposite of a hard-water city — instead of fighting scale, we build alkalinity with a bicarbonate buffer, raise calcium hardness where your manufacturer calls for it, and re-check pH every visit. We test your actual fill water on the first visit, because suburban districts and Vancouver's wells run very differently. Very soft, and low in alkalinity. Portland Water Bureau's Bull Run supply typically runs 7–11 ppm total hardness (about ½ grain per gallon); its July 2026 test results list 100% Bull Run water at 7 mg/L hardness, 29 mg/L alkalinity, and pH 8.8. The bureau's Columbia South Shore groundwater, blended in at times, is harder at roughly 68–80 ppm. Vancouver, WA runs on groundwater at 79–140 ppm hardness (2024 city report). We test your actual fill water on the first visit and balance to your manufacturer's spec.
It corrodes rather than scales: water with almost no calcium pulls metal from chiller heat exchangers, pump hardware, heater elements, and fittings. With little alkalinity to buffer it, pH swings after every sanitizer dose, shock, or rain overflow. We build alkalinity with a bicarbonate buffer, raise calcium hardness where the manufacturer calls for it, and re-check pH every visit.
Portland winters are mostly wet, but cold snaps and ice storms happen and often bring power outages. A plunge that keeps circulating rarely freezes; trouble starts when the pump stops on a sub-freezing night. Keep exposed lines short or insulated, keep the cover sealed, use a reliable GFCI circuit, and if the power goes out during a freeze, call us before restarting. Through the rainy months, keep the cover on and clear needles, leaves, and moss from the chiller's air intake.
