A cold plunge that stopped cooling — and a display that had gone dark
The situation
The plunge had quit holding temperature and the owner-facing display was unresponsive. Left alone, a warm plunge is more than an inconvenience — stagnant, un-chilled water is where biofilm and bacteria take hold.
What we found
Three failures stacked on top of each other: a chiller unit that could no longer pull the water down to setpoint, a degraded ribbon cable feeding the control display, and a worn filter housing. A blank screen made it look like one problem; it was really a cooling failure and a signal failure at the same time.
The science
A cold plunge chiller is a refrigeration loop — compressor, condenser coil, evaporator, and refrigerant. It moves heat out of the water. When the condenser can't shed that heat (fouled coils, brutal ambient temps) or the compressor wears down, the loop loses capacity and the water simply won't reach or hold temperature. Separately, the control board talks to the temperature sensor and display through a thin ribbon cable. When that cable cracks, the screen blinks, goes dark, or feeds back false readings — so a perfectly good chiller can look "dead." Diagnosing the difference is the whole job.
What we did
Replaced the chiller unit, installed a new filter housing, and swapped the UI and ribbon cable to restore the sensor-to-display signal path. Then filled, ran, and tested the system end to end — confirmed a clean temperature drop and no leaks before leaving.
Chiller and control system rebuilt, filled, and tested on-site — plunge confirmed holding its setpoint with no leaks.
